Holy mackerel

It has been over 3 weeks since I last posted!  Wow!  It is what it is, I guess.  Things have been getting better on the learning front.  I have added several new services to my homelab.  Right now I need to get a grasp on how they will work in my environment.  I am probably going to have to remove several services from my mini dell box due to ram usage; the box is at 45 percent now.  It might go down after a reboot which i need to do after the kernel update, but I will see later this week.  I need to update that box to ubuntu 2024 but 2026 is coming out next month possibly and I might go to it and skip 2024.  I should know by next week.  Also spun up a couple of LXC's and VM's on the proxmox server and taking them for a test drive.  I still have not updated Wazuh to the new version but the agents are updated to the version running on the server so I am okay for now. I have 8 instances running in proxmox now with 25% ram usage and less than 10% for cpu.  Considering I have Wazuh and windows server 2022 as part of that listing that's pretty good!

I want to get a lot done this month and a lot of killer upgrades on my plate (wazuh, proxmox, ubuntu server 2022.04 to 2026.04, homeassistant, and possibly test drive windows server 2025.  Maybe!!!!

It has been a while, again!

Well a lot has happened in the last couple of weeks.  I have been working on my homelab and it is coming along pretty good now.  I got most of my services updated and installed a couple of new services (filewizard, draw.io, onlyoffice and invoiceninja).  I have a lot more to do in the next couple of weeks.  I have been trying to move a couple of my services to the proxmox server in either VM's or LXC's.

Now I have to work on my Wazuh box after getting it upgraded.  need to upgrade the 2 endpoints I have it monitoring and go from there.

It's been real, lol!

Time for TV now

Well, it has been a long couple of weeks.  Listen to a lot of online youtube/zoom video with people saying being an introvert does not win the race for getting a job (more or less).  Not sure what to do about that since I am an introvert by nature.  Trying to break out of the shell but I think I need to take baby steps.  In some races winning does count but crossing the finish line also counts.  I need to think about crossing the finish line and stop making the hurdles I need to clear so high for me!

Things that make you go umm!

Okay, for the last couple of weeks I have been getting these buffer studders in plex when I am watching a movie, which I thought was weird since it never happened before this point.  I thought it was probably due to all the services I am running on the server I am running plex off of now.  I have over 30 services running on a intel core i3 with 16 gigs of ram (jellyfin, homeassistant, mssql, adguardhome, homebox, immich, photoprism and portainer plus a whole lot more).  The box is using 40% usages for ram but less than 10% for cpu when idle.  Now as I am watching a movie I just noticed something I kind of saw before but did not think much of it at the time.  When I run plex on a pc I can get the subtitles to show by default.  It never worked when I used android, google-tv, roku or the firestick.  Now it appears to be working and I think that is possible pegging the processor when It is running now.  Crazy, I had just switched to the vlc player for watching movies when i wanted to see the subtitles and now plex decides to start working now with subtitles.  It is what it is I guess!  I will check the forums later to see if an update came out that activated that feature on the tv sticks.  Scratching head, lol!

It's been a while!

I know it has been a while, but it is the holidays, and everything goes out the window this time of the year.  Still working on the homelab: wazuh, home assistant and proxmox.  Also taking advantage of hacking what I own.  Learning a lot but still have a long way to go now.

I am watching a BHIS event now and it is giving me a lot to think about with the direction of my career.  I think I need to get over the imposter syndrome mindset when it comes to applying for jobs and just go for it!  Now I need to focus on what I can learn now and see where I am in a month and go from there.

Give me strength!  LOL!

Not even close!

Well, it has been another week more or less and I am taking baby steps to getting my stuff together.  I have spun up a couple more services and watched a lot of YouTube videos/zoom meetings on cybertech.  Today's zoom meeting had my head spinning at the end of it due to the technical nature of the subject.  I have got some stuff done as far as the homelab.  Upgraded the r620 to 96 gigs of ram and now need to see how to best over provision it with LXC's and VM's.  I am being told not to use LXC's if I don't have to but you get so much bang for your buck using them not sure how I am going to back off on them, we will see.....

Now to get security onion setup as well as blackubuntu.  May also work on Splunk and bloodhound but I need to focus on getting Wazuh learned well.  It is hard but I guess if it was easy anyone could do it. 😁

Almost there

I have been working on a lot in the last several days.  Also watching a lot of tech videos.  I mean a lot of videos, lol!  Learning a lot but not quite there yet.  I have been all over the place with what I am working on which will have to stop here soon.  I have been doing a lot on the Proxmox server but need to update the ram in it to go further.  Mini server I have been doing a lot on with Portainer and the containers I have running on it.  I almost got VM's working on it but not yet on the mini server.  I need to circle back to Wazuh and all that it entails (powershell, sysmon, virustotal and a touch of wireshark).  I have also been working with runZero which is an interesting product, I guess!  

I have been thinking about installing security onion and greylog on Proxmox to kick the tires on them.  Maybe if I get adventurous this week, lol!  So much to learn and so little time!

Wazuh!

Okay

I did not get the mini server done but that is due to me using it 18 hours out of the day.  I hope and pray that does not come back and bite me later but oh well!  I have backed up the dockers containers as well as the 2 apps I use for video playback (Jellyfin and Plex), I also got VLC setup on my network as a backup just in case.  Not the same as Plex but I can play my videos from any tv in my house without issue.  Which I have been doing a lot of the last couple of days.  Learning a lot especially with Proxmox and Wazuh.  Yes, I finally got Wazuh spun up on the dell r610 in Proxmox after watching several videos before and after it was installed.  I still have a lot of work with getting it configured and wow it was definitely a learning curve trying to use it on just 2 computers running the agent.  I want to install the agent on the docker containers and the other VM's I have running on the r610.  I hope to get better over the next couple of weeks.

Not much this week

Well, I did not get much done last week.  Just watching videos on sysmon, powershell and linux commands.

I still have not replaced my hdd in my mini server with a ssd.  I will complete that this week for sure, lol!  I had a scare today with running system updates on that box and it hosing up trying to update Jellyfin.  It prompted my to reboot when I saw the error message in the logs but that did not work, uh oh!  I had to take a deep breath and test the rest of my services running on that box and all was good but Jellyfin would not come up after several minutes.  So, I reran the system update command and that seems to have fixed it.  Whew!!!!

I have a backup of the database that I have not tested but this week would have sucked if I had to go that method.  I should switch it to a docker container, so it is easier to backup but oh well.  I think I need to spin up docker containers for plex and jellyfin and migrate my stuff to them.  It would have to be on the r610 in proxmox.  Hearing about several tools for pentesting online that I need to look into soon.  Learning a lot as of late.

Last Week Very Interesting

Okay

I did not get my mini server hdd replaced nor wazuh setup last week but I did get some other important things accomplished.

Installed a couple of services on my mini server ( iperf3 and drawio ), watched a lot of videos on setting up wazuh, winget, powershell/linux tutorials.  I worked on setting on a hacking lab on both of my laptops using virtualbox.  I also learned something important about using clonezilla, a 500 gig SSD and a 480 gig SSD are not workable if you are going from 500 gig hdd to 480 ssd and I have to remember to use gparted when I go from a 256 gig ssd to a 480 gig ssd.  I need to find a disk copying tool that is less complex.  Live and learn🤔
